With striking prehistoric landscapes, a young hunter fighting to survive, and an unexpected friendship at its heart, Alpha delivers an adventure that is as much about trust and courage as it is about the bond between humans and animals.

Introduction: More Than Just a Boy and His Wolf

What happens when a young man who struggles to kill an animal finds himself depending on one to survive? That is the central idea behind Alpha (2018), an adventure drama directed by Albert Hughes that explores the beginnings of the relationship between humans and dogs.

Set approximately 20,000 years ago during the last Ice Age, the film takes viewers into a world where survival is never guaranteed. Food is difficult to find, the weather can turn deadly, and dangerous animals roam the landscape. Against this backdrop, Alpha builds a story around an unlikely friendship between a young hunter and an injured wolf.

The film has an appealing concept, but its biggest selling point is not simply the relationship between the two central characters. It is the way their journey explores compassion, courage, and the difference between surviving alone and learning to trust another living creature.

Although the story occasionally asks viewers to accept more than a little movie magic, Alpha offers an entertaining adventure with enough emotional weight to appeal to families and animal lovers.

What Is Alpha About? A Journey Through a Dangerous World

The story follows Keda, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, a young hunter whose father, Tau, expects him to become a strong and capable member of their tribe. However, Keda is not naturally comfortable with the harsh realities of hunting and killing animals. His compassionate nature puts him at odds with the expectations placed upon him.

During a dangerous hunting expedition, Keda suffers a devastating fall and becomes separated from his people. Injured and stranded in the wilderness, he must find a way to survive in an environment where almost everything poses a threat.

His circumstances become even more complicated when he encounters an injured wolf. Rather than leave the animal to die, Keda chooses to help it and names it Alpha.

What follows is a difficult journey in which the boy and the wolf gradually develop trust. Neither can afford to rely entirely on the other at first, but their growing connection becomes essential to their survival.

The premise is straightforward, and that simplicity works in the film’s favor. Instead of getting lost in complicated subplots, Alpha concentrates on the relationship between its two central characters and the dangers they face together.

Acting and Characters: Kodi Smit-McPhee Carries the Emotional Weight

Kodi Smit-McPhee gives Keda a quiet vulnerability that suits the character. Rather than portraying him as an instantly capable action hero, the performance emphasizes a young man who has much to learn about himself and the world around him.

Keda’s development is one of the film’s more interesting elements. His initial reluctance to kill is treated as a weakness by the society in which he lives, but the story gradually shows how his compassion can become a strength.

That character progression gives the adventure a meaningful emotional foundation. Keda does not simply need to survive physically; he must also discover what kind of person he wants to become.

Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson plays Tau, Keda’s father, whose expectations reflect the brutal realities of their environment. Tau believes strength is essential because weakness can mean death. While his approach may seem harsh, it makes sense within the film’s prehistoric setting.

The relationship between father and son establishes an important contrast between traditional ideas of strength and the possibility that empathy can be equally valuable.

However, the human characters are not always explored as deeply as they could be. The film gives viewers enough information to understand their motivations, but some relationships would benefit from more development.

Fortunately, Keda and Alpha provide the emotional connection the story needs. Their bond grows through actions rather than lengthy conversations, allowing the film to communicate trust and affection without relying heavily on dialogue.

Storyline and Direction: A Simple Idea With a Few Problems

Director Albert Hughes keeps the narrative focused on Keda’s struggle to survive. The film moves from one challenge to another, introducing environmental dangers and physical obstacles that force the young hunter to adapt.

This approach gives the story a steady sense of movement. There is rarely much time for Keda to become comfortable, and the changing dangers help maintain interest throughout his journey.

However, the screenplay occasionally stretches credibility. Some situations resolve in ways that feel unusually convenient, making it difficult to take every moment of the survival story seriously.

Suspension of disbelief is part of watching an adventure film, of course, but there are moments when Alpha seems more interested in getting its characters to the next dramatic situation than in making every development feel entirely convincing.

Even so, the central relationship prevents the story from becoming a simple collection of survival challenges. Each encounter contributes to Keda’s development and his growing understanding of the wolf.

The film also makes an interesting choice by using a prehistoric language rather than having the characters speak modern English. This helps establish the setting and gives the world a sense of distance from contemporary life.

Because communication is limited, the actors must rely on expressions, gestures, and physical behavior to convey emotion. That approach suits a story in which the connection between a human and an animal is more important than elaborate dialogue.

Cinematography and Production: The Film’s Biggest Strength

If there is one area where Alpha makes a particularly strong impression, it is its visual presentation.

The cinematography by Martin Gschlacht captures the enormous scale of the prehistoric environment. Keda often appears small against the surrounding landscape, emphasizing how vulnerable he is in a world that offers little protection.

The scenery is not merely decorative. Mountains, frozen terrain, open plains, and harsh weather all contribute to the sense that survival requires constant effort.

The contrast between the beauty of the environment and its dangers is especially effective. A landscape can appear peaceful from a distance while hiding conditions capable of killing an unprepared traveler.

One particularly memorable sequence involves Keda struggling beneath a frozen lake while Alpha remains above the ice. The scene combines physical danger with striking imagery, making the environment feel like an active threat rather than a passive backdrop.

The production’s visual effects also help bring the wolf into the story. The animal’s presence is essential because the entire emotional foundation depends on the audience accepting the growing connection between Keda and his companion.

The film succeeds in making their relationship central to the adventure, although viewers may occasionally wonder how much of the animal’s behavior comes from live-action performance and how much relies on digital effects.

Overall, the visual work gives Alpha an identity that extends beyond its relatively simple plot.

What Alpha Gets Right

1. The friendship feels earned.

The relationship between Keda and Alpha develops gradually. Trust does not appear immediately, and the characters must learn to coexist before they can depend on each other. That progression makes their connection more satisfying.

2. The film makes compassion part of survival.

Keda’s kindness initially seems to put him at a disadvantage in a harsh environment. As the story progresses, however, his willingness to help another creature becomes one of his greatest strengths. It is a simple but effective message.

3. The visuals give the adventure a strong sense of scale.

The cinematography captures the beauty and danger of the Ice Age setting. The landscapes help communicate how isolated Keda is and how difficult his journey will be.

4. The storytelling remains accessible.

The central conflict is easy to understand, making the film approachable for viewers who prefer straightforward adventures over complicated plots. Its themes of friendship, courage, and loyalty also give families something to discuss after watching.

5. The limited dialogue encourages visual storytelling.

Rather than explaining every emotion through conversation, the film frequently allows expressions, gestures, and actions to communicate what the characters are experiencing. This works particularly well in scenes involving Keda and Alpha.

What Could Have Been Better?

Despite its strengths, Alpha is not without weaknesses.

The most noticeable problem is the occasional implausibility of its survival scenarios. Keda faces serious dangers, but certain developments feel too convenient to carry the full dramatic weight the filmmakers appear to intend.

The story’s straightforward structure also limits its complexity. Once the relationship between the boy and the wolf becomes the main focus, the narrative follows a fairly predictable direction. Viewers looking for surprising character developments or a particularly intricate plot may find the film less engaging.

Character development beyond Keda and Alpha is another area that could have received more attention. Tau establishes the expectations Keda must overcome, but the film could have explored their relationship further to make Keda’s personal growth even more meaningful.

There is also a degree of sentimentality in the way the movie presents the wolf. Alpha is a wild animal, and the film sometimes leans toward familiar domestic-pet behavior to strengthen the emotional connection with the audience.

That choice makes the story accessible, but it also softens some of the realism suggested by the harsh prehistoric setting.

These shortcomings do not ruin the experience, but they prevent Alpha from reaching the full potential of its premise.

Why Alpha May Appeal to African Audiences

For movie lovers in Nigeria and across Africa, Alpha offers a different kind of adventure from the family dramas, romantic stories, comedies, and action films that frequently attract mainstream attention.

Its appeal lies in its simple but universal themes. Family expectations, personal growth, courage, loyalty, and the struggle to survive are ideas that can resonate across different cultures.

Keda’s relationship with his father may also interest viewers familiar with stories about generational expectations. Tau wants his son to become strong enough to survive, while Keda must discover that strength does not always look the way others expect.

This conflict is not unique to any one society, which helps the film connect with audiences from different backgrounds.

The relationship between Keda and Alpha also gives the movie broad family appeal. Viewers who enjoy animal stories, outdoor adventures, and films about unlikely friendships will find plenty to appreciate.

For Nigerian viewers looking for something different from a typical Nollywood production, Alpha provides an opportunity to explore a prehistoric setting through an accessible human story.

Its strongest appeal, however, is universal rather than specifically African. The film does not need to make direct cultural references to connect with audiences who appreciate meaningful relationships and straightforward adventure storytelling.

Final Verdict: Is Alpha Worth Watching?

Alpha (2018) is an enjoyable prehistoric adventure that benefits from strong cinematography, a compelling central relationship, and Kodi Smit-McPhee’s understated performance.

Its story is relatively simple, and a few implausible situations weaken the realism of its survival narrative. Some supporting characters also deserve more development, while the portrayal of the wolf occasionally leans too heavily toward sentimentality.

Nevertheless, the film understands what makes its central idea appealing. Keda and Alpha come from different worlds, yet their shared struggle gradually turns suspicion into trust. That relationship gives the adventure an emotional purpose beyond simply getting its characters from one dangerous situation to another.

For families, animal lovers, and viewers who enjoy survival adventures, Alpha is worth considering. Those expecting a complex screenplay or a highly realistic account of prehistoric life may find it less satisfying.

The bottom line: Alpha is a visually impressive adventure with a warm story at its center. Its occasional storytelling shortcuts keep it from being exceptional, but the friendship between a vulnerable young hunter and a wild wolf gives the film enough heart to make the journey worthwhile.
